Relationship Therapy at Gaddum

Many people come to relationship therapy at a difficult or uncertain point in their lives, and taking the first step to seek support can feel daunting.

We understand that relationships can be complex, and that asking for help is not always easy.

Help is available from Gaddum’s Relationship Therapy service

Who is relationship therapy for?

Relationship therapy provides a safe, supportive space to better understand and navigate your relationship challenges. Relationship therapy can be beneficial if you’re looking to achieve any, or some, of the following relationship goals:

  • strengthen your connection
  • rebuild trust and understanding
  • repair and strengthen your relationship
  • find new ways to connect
  • improve understanding between one another
  • work towards healthier patterns of relating
  • navigate difficulties together
  • restore communication and connection

Who is eligible to apply for Gaddum's relationship therapy service?

We offer a low-cost relationship therapy service, open to anyone in Greater Manchester over the age of 18.

There are 10 councils within Greater Manchester that fall into this catchment area: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan.

We accept referrals from:

  • Couples, including heterosexual, same sex couples and people in the LGBTQI+ community
  • Parents and adult children (18+ only)
  • Individuals where the focus is upon a particular relationship issue
  • Other relationships, including friends, siblings, or other family members

What specific issues can relationship therapy help with?

Our service offers couples therapy, psychosexual therapy, and more general relationship therapy for issues including but not limited to:

  • Conflict and arguments
  • Family or parenting difficulties
  • Communication difficulties
  • Sexuality and intimacy e.g. sexual dysfunction, sexual fears and phobias, problems of libido etc
  • Self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Recovering after an affair
  • Bereavement and loss

The most appropriate support will be decided after an initial assessment which will be arranged following the completion of our online referral form.

If we feel we are not an appropriate service for you then we will always do our best to signpost you to somewhere else that might be a better fit.

*Please note, we are unable to work with issues around domestic abuse. If you feel this is a core focus of your reason for entering therapy, then please reach out to one of these organisations and services.

What can I expect from a therapy session?

Our therapists offer a warm, non-judgemental and supportive environment to ensure you feel heard and can find a way through any difficulties you might be facing in your relationship.

Together with your therapist you will discuss a focus for your work together, recognising that individual goals can differ, but trying to clarify what would be the most helpful for both of you.

How much does it cost?

We offer an accessible rate for relationship therapy at £40 per session. This is payable before the session and will be discussed in your assessment.

How many sessions can I have?

Typically, we would arrange 8 sessions as a starting point, but the exact number will be agreed between you and your therapist depending on the issues you want to address.

Where do the sessions take place?

We offer in person sessions from our therapy space in Hulme or online video calls if this is more convenient. The location of your sessions will also depend on availability at the time of booking your therapy sessions.

Do you offer relationship therapy in languages other than English?

Unfortunately, we are not currently able to offer translation or therapy in different languages.

How do I contact you with any questions?

Please send an email to relationshiptherapy@gaddum.org.uk and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

How do I refer?

To access the service, please complete our online referral form and a member of the team will be in touch with you to arrange an initial assessment within a few weeks.

Where can I get help right away?

It is important to know that there can be a wait for support to start, and we are not a crisis service.

For this reason, if you feel like you’re in crisis or need urgent help right now, please see this list of urgent support services who can help you right away.

We’d also recommend speaking with your GP, if you feel you need more urgent support.

I'm a therapist - how do I apply for a placement?

We’re delighted that you’re considering joining our team!

Please note: this is an unpaid, voluntary role for qualified therapists who are working towards an additional qualification in relationship or psychosexual therapy.

In the first instance, please email our relationship therapy team and we will be in touch to discuss next steps: relationshiptherapy@gaddum.org.uk
