HomeGaddum’s Angels – a poem by Tony, a Salford carer

We have another poet in our midst, and we’re so humbled to listen to this lovely poem and short film singing our praises by Tony, who cares for his dad.

Gaddum’s Angels

Gaddum, a charity of angels 200 years in the making.

Where problems can be aired and solutions shared,

proving you’re not alone out there.

These angels never stop working,

always here with a friendly ear for those who need to shed a tear.

Coffee mornings make life less daunting,

with well run courses to educate,

all of which keep our cog driven brains working.

Walking with a clan allowing one’s mind to wander,

soaking up fresh air, while talking to one another.

So time to tell of those looking after thee,

you’ll have to play guess who, as you won’t hear any names from me.

Even if Sid James still walked among us, and a Ben Elton script was to magically appear,

this man would have to star, you see there’s only one worthy of the lead, in “Carry On Gaddum!”.

Humour is his key, stopping men avoiding, getting them talking.

Warm wise words replace the cold dark silence,

with a big dose of laughter, he makes life’s problems so much lighter.

Then to the chap who notices everything, like the extinguisher expiry date,

and the location of the nearest fire escape.

You can tell he is very well read, always with a story or good analogy to hand.

He is also cool, calm and collect, even brave enough, to recite lines from Python’s-Life of Brian,

whilst seated next to a fierce Scottish Lady, who sings in the church choir!

Now I have to admit that last little bit, has been taken out of context,

but don’t go getting your pants in a twist, I’m claiming, artistic licence.

When it comes to swimming, never bet against this lady.

For even Sharon Davies in a speedboat only managed second place.

Day to day our lady uses her sharp skills and laser focus,

compiling carers’ needs and reporting back to those who lead us.

So a friendly warning to those in power, no matter where you reside,

be it in a local council office, or the green bays of the house of commons,

if you forget about us, you could find our very own Shield-Maiden,

kicking your butt, and sending you to the tower!

Arriving by chauffeur driven bus, stopping right outside Hug in a Mug.

Tea, white, no sugar is the order of the day, before listening to stories of one’s dismay.

So let me introduce you to Gaddum’s list princess,

who files everything in indexed order, allowing for fingertip answers to all your requests.

Mailing details of counselling, training and advice, to your preferred device.

But her real superpower, is a caring ear and wisdom beyond her years,

means you can share one’s ups and downs without any fears.

Now for a little clue, our princess loves to travel,

clocking up so many air miles, you’d be forgiven for thinking she’s an airline pilot!

So do you know who the fab four are? Save a stamp, no need to send answers on a postcard!

Professional and well run, the services offered are second to none,

I hate to think, what would be, without the Gaddum reach.

So this is my take on the work the team has done,

and whilst I’ve had a little jest, don’t think for one moment that I’m not extremely impressed.

So please join me, raising a cup of tea and giving them a massive,

Hip Hip, HOORAY!
